January 7 According to The Times, Villa coach Emery hopes to help the team
With a trophy, the cup king hopes to show his ability to lead the team in the cup.
Villa new boss Unai Emery announced in November that his first goal at Aston Villa was to win trophies.
Of course, it’s normal for a new manager at any club to say that goal in their first meeting with the media, but Emery is obsessed with trophies, especially cup trophies.
Basque Emery is, as Jurgen Klopp once hailed, the "king of the cups".
"They have probably the most successful cup manager in world football, so he knows what he’s doing," he said before facing Villarreal in the Champions League last year.
Emery has won nine major honors, only one of which was the league title, which he won with PSG in 2017/18.
While his results in the league were less than stellar for the teams he managed, he has mastered the art of going far in cup competition, which has enabled him to win a record four Europa League titles.
His qualities were a big part of why Villa’s top brass picked him, with their supporters starving for success for years and hoping Emery can work some of his magic in the cup this season.
Emery said: "I like the cups in Spain, France and England. The FA Cup is a good chance to try for a trophy and on Sunday we will prepare to win."
Villa have failed to make it past the third round in each of the past six seasons, with disappointing defeats to Swansea City and Peterborough United in particular.
Villa are currently 11th in the league, so their best chance of success this season comes in the FA Cup.
This is Emery’s chance to achieve his main goal of picking up trophies and getting his side into the Europa League.
Emery is expected to bring his magic to Villa Park, ending Villa’s 27-year wait for the title.
