And his coaching staff have decided to leave James out of Chelsea’s 20-man squad against Southampton at the weekend because they want to manage his playing time.
The 23-year-old right-back has played more minutes than expected since his return from a knee injury, so Chelsea decided to keep him out of the game.
James suffered a knee injury against AC Milan in October last year and again against Bournemouth on December 27, keeping him sidelined for another five weeks.
Chelsea want James to feature in their big game against Tottenham on February 26 and the Champions League last-16 second leg against Dortmund on March 7.
James has made 15 appearances for Chelsea so far this season.
