December 13-German media Bild reporter Moritz Leihmann visited the site of the accident in Neuer.
He himself said:
I know this area very well because I grew up at the foot of these mountains. I glided 50 times on the slope where Neuer fell, including snowboarding. This is not extreme, but it is not suitable for beginners.
Because the landscape is very difficult to adapt to, besides me, there are more than a dozen tourists on the top of the mountain. But few people drive down the steep slope to Gr ü nsee like Neuer. But along the ski lift, which is much flatter, and they have a good reason to do so.
The snow is still thin. On the fifth turn, there was a crack under my board because I hit the first stone. Where I turn, there are often clusters of grass protruding after I turn. Although there has been at least 25 centimeters of snow since yesterday, it is hard to imagine that there was only 11 centimeters of snow on the day of Neuer’s accident.
The danger is that you can’t see boulders under the thin snow. But in the process of rapid descent, they become invisible obstacles, and you will soon be trapped on it. Even if the snowboard gets stuck on the grass, it will quickly put you out of balance. In these moments, dream days can sometimes turn into nightmares.
I slowed down and slid at a more leisurely pace towards Neuer’s broken calf.
It is only when you stand up that you realize how steep it is. If you don’t have the steel blade of a snowboard, you will lose your foothold immediately.
After the crash, Neuer was rescued by mountain rescue services, and due to difficult terrain, they immediately asked for helicopter rescue.
So was Neuer’s accident the result of recklessness?
In principle, for experienced skiers, a quick descent on Ro é kopf is not a dangerous route. In a sunny winter, hundreds of people go there. Perhaps he misjudged the situation because the snow was so thin that the risk of falls and injuries was much higher than ideal.
In the end, I fell, too, but luckily I was all right.
